How to pay in China as a visitor

Prepare two mobile-payment options, a bank-card fallback and some cash before departure.

Build a three-layer payment plan

Install Alipay and WeChat before travel when they are available in your app store. Try linking an eligible international card and complete any requested identity checks.

Tell your bank you will travel, keep a second card from another network, and carry a modest amount of RMB cash. A linked card can still be declined by a bank, merchant or risk system.

Test without assuming

Confirm your name and passport details match. Enable transaction alerts and know how to contact your bank. Do not wait until the airport queue to discover that SMS verification goes to a number you cannot access.

At the counter

Ask whether the merchant scans your payment code or you scan theirs. Check the amount before approving. If mobile payment fails, move to your backup instead of retrying many times.
